Brant Houston
GIJN co-founder; professor at the University of Illinois
Brant Houston develops tools and institutions for document- and data-based investigations. He led Investigative Reporters and Editors for more than a decade, co-founded the Global Investigative Journalism Network and Institute for Nonprofit News, and previously spent seventeen years reporting for newspapers. His Computer-Assisted Reporting textbook and co-authored editions of The Investigative Reporter’s Handbook help journalists move from a suspicion towards evidence that can be checked, rather than relying solely on powerful people’s statements. At the University of Illinois, he oversees CU-CitizenAccess and studies nonprofit journalism, combining training with institution-building that supports independent scrutiny.
