Investigative reporter; professor at the University of Maryland
Deborah Nelson co-authored The Seattle Times’ Pulitzer-winning investigation into abuses in the federal housing programme serving Native American communities. As an editor, she also contributed to award-winning investigations concerning child welfare and military accidents, working as part of the editorial teams. Her book The War Behind Me examined the concealment of American war crimes in Vietnam and soldiers who tried to stop the atrocities. Her later Reuters collaborations have addressed global hunger, military family housing, inequality, pandemics and antibiotic resistance, reflecting sustained scrutiny of how institutions fail people in matters of health, security and basic rights.
