Dmitry Muratov
Russian journalist; Novaya Gazeta co-founder and longtime editor-in-chief
Dmitry Muratov co-founded Novaya Gazeta, a newsroom documenting corruption, abuse of power and human rights violations in Russia. His contribution includes longstanding editorial leadership and sustaining space for investigative reporters; individual journalists retain credit for their own findings. In 2021 he shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Maria Ressa for defending freedom of expression. CPJ had previously honoured him with its 2007 International Press Freedom Award. Representative work of his own includes “Antidote against tyranny”, his 10 December 2021 speech on independent journalism and the memory of murdered reporters, and “Citizen Gorinov”, published on 26 November 2024 about the situation of an imprisoned opponent of the war. His candidacy recognises documented editorial work, explaining mechanisms of repression and sustaining accountability to audiences despite pressure on independent media.
