Roman Anin

Russian investigative journalist; IStories co-founder

Roman Anin investigates connections between big business and political power, including hidden financial flows involving Russian elites. He worked at Novaya Gazeta, collaborated with ICIJ and OCCRP and founded IStories, a newsroom developing document- and data-based reporting. Representative work includes co-authoring “Kirill and Katya”, published on 7 December 2020: the team examined correspondence and transactions involving Kirill Shamalov and Vladimir Putin’s family. The investigation received the 2021 European Press Prize Investigative Reporting Award, a collective honour. A second example is his reporting contribution to “Looting the Seas III”, an investigation into the global fishing industry. ICFJ awarded him its Knight International Journalism Award in 2013 and Knight Trailblazer Award in 2020. His candidacy recognises cross-border collaboration, scrutiny of powerful people’s financial interests and providing audiences with evidence underpinning the findings.
