Jane Lytvynenko investigates disinformation, online manipulation and propaganda using open-source research. Her experience includes BuzzFeed News and research and newsroom training at Harvard Kennedy School’s Shorenstein Center, with Russia’s war against Ukraine a focus. In an interview with PEN America, she explained how propaganda videos and social media material, once verified, can provide evidence concerning occupied territories, imprisoned people and children taken from Ukraine. She also addresses harassment targeting reporters and the importance of showing audiences the route from source to conclusion, because labelling a claim false does not by itself explain how manipulation works.
