Sarah Ryley
Investigative and data journalist
Her investigation for the New York Daily News with ProPublica exposed New York police use of eviction rules against hundreds of residents, most of them poor minorities. The newsrooms received the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for these findings, with the official citation highlighting her reporting in particular. She later examined subjects including conflicts of interest in medical research and gaps in enforcement of gun regulations, comparing institutional safeguards with actual practice. Her methods combine large-scale data analysis with individual experiences, turning an administrative procedure into a comprehensible question of rights, accountability and unequal treatment.
