Sheila Coronel
PCIJ co-founder; professor at Columbia Journalism School
Sheila Coronel began reporting for the Philippine opposition press near the end of Ferdinand Marcos’s dictatorship, covering human rights abuses and democratic change. She co-founded the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism, whose reporters examined corruption, nepotism and the wealth of senior public figures. PCIJ’s revelations about President Joseph Estrada’s mansions contributed to the political crisis and his removal in 2001, an achievement of PCIJ’s collaborative reporting. Coronel has also examined police abuses during the Philippine drug war, while her Columbia University teaching and investigative textbooks pass on methods rooted in records, verification and responsibility towards sources.
