Jennifer LaFleur
Data journalist and journalism educator
Her career combines investigative editing with analysis of inequality and institutional conduct, including situations where official procedures can conceal discrimination. At the Center for Public Integrity she managed projects including 40 Acres and a Lie, whose team examined historical records of land granted to formerly enslaved people and subsequently taken away. She also investigated federal pardons, Medicare prescribing and racial bias in jury selection, while helping launch The Accountability Project at the Investigative Reporting Workshop. As a Berkeley educator she passes these methods to other reporters, demonstrating how scattered public records can support verifiable findings rather than merely striking charts.
