Megha Rajagopalan
Investigative reporter; Pulitzer Prize co-winner
Megha Rajagopalan co-produced BuzzFeed News' investigation documenting the expansion of infrastructure for the mass detention of Muslims in China's Xinjiang region. The team combined satellite imagery, architectural analysis and interviews with roughly two dozen former prisoners rather than relying solely on official statements. Its reporting addressed both the system's physical scale and the experiences of people held there, as well as factories within detention compounds. Alongside Alison Killing and Christo Buschek, she received the 2021 Pulitzer for this series, recognising a shared reporting, spatial and analytical effort on a subject exceptionally difficult to access.
