Shibani Mahtani
International investigative correspondent
Shibani Mahtani documented Hong Kong's protests and political transformation, paying particular attention to institutional accountability and residents' experiences. Her investigation into police misconduct received a Human Rights Press Award, while her regional reporting developed through work for the Washington Post and Wall Street Journal. With Timothy McLaughlin, she wrote “Among the Braves”, an account of the pro-democracy movement, the 2019 protests and subsequent repression and exile. The book follows individual activists, connecting the political struggle over the city's future with the personal cost of losing freedoms and building a life away from home.
